MDS Middle School - Rigorous and Engaging

At Morganton Day, we offer a small, rigorous middle school experience, something increasingly rare in education today. Our teachers can truly know each student while holding them to high academic and personal standards. In these formative years, when confidence and identity are still taking shape, that balance matters deeply.

Within the International Baccalaureate (IB) framework, this experience becomes even more powerful. The IB philosophy provides a consistent thread from the earliest grades through middle school, grounding students in inquiry, critical thinking, and global awareness. Teachers and the MDS Middle School curriculum provide challenge, support, and the opportunity to take intellectual risks. Class discussions are richer, collaboration is more meaningful, and every voice has a place. Students are not only prepared academically; they are known, encouraged, and inspired.

This year's Humanities Front Porch series is an excellent example of the rigor and in-depth study our students engage in throughout the year. As part of this project, students created the Voices of Morganton - a look into the people and perspectives of Morganton's history. Together with Ms. Cato-Chapman, students interviewed community members, collated the qualitative data, and created a Reader's Theatre presentation. Additionally, their project was accepted for the Appalachian Studies Organization Conference on the campus of Marshall University. Two of our 8th-grade students did an outstanding job presenting their project to a wider academic audience. They represented our school with confidence, insight, and professionalism as they shared their work and engaged with academics from across the country.

We are incredibly proud of their accomplishment and the thoughtful way they elevated student voice beyond our classroom. We look forward to their presentation this Friday, when they will share their work with our own community.

It is clear that by the time students leave MDS middle school, they have gained more than strong academic skills. They have developed confidence, independence, and a pride in their education. Rooted in the IB learner profile, they are prepared not just for the demands of high school, but for thoughtful engagement in an ever-changing world.
