Veterans Day
I am often asked, "Why do MDS students attend school on Veterans Day?"
As an International Baccalaureate school, it is extremely important to provide authentic learning opportunities that allow students to learn about the meaning of service, sacrifice, and citizenship. While some schools close for the holiday, MDS students attend school so they can actively engage in honoring those who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
Throughout the day, our students engaged with stories, videos, and local presentations to recognize veterans and had the opportunity to express gratitude.
This year, our Third Grade class braved the frigid temperatures and attended a celebration on the courthouse lawn. Additionally, teachers designed lessons and projects that connect Veterans Day to history, civics, and character education. Our students created thank-you cards, created art displays, researched the different branches of the military, and discussed what it means to serve others.
These learning experiences help build empathy, appreciation, and a sense of civic responsibility.
