Making a Difference Through Service

Each year, MDS students unite in effort to share their time, talents, and resources with our community. Service as Action is an important aspect of the IB philosophy. By seeking opportunities to take action, we strive to develop caring members of the community who make a positive difference in the lives of others and in our environment. Throughout the year, students engage with our local community; however, on this special day, we take time to celebrate our engagement within the community together. Through experiences that focus on service as action, students learn the value of community participation and gain a deeper understanding of the needs within their immediate surroundings. Teachers take the opportunity to reflect with students and brainstorm ways we can continue to make a difference this day and beyond.

We look forward to "Making a Difference through Service Day" with excitement each year, knowing that MDS is an active part of the Morganton community. This year, students made scarves for those who may be outside in the cold, filled the downtown sidewalks with inspirational messages, replenished Blessing Boxes, made cards for those in active military duty, created Thanksgiving placemats for local senior citizens, provided lunch for Morganton Public Safety, worked with Mountain Aid Environmental Agency, and shared volunteer time and resources for Options. We can learn so much by taking part in all that is happening around us. One community member shared, "I am so inspired! If children this young can make a difference, so can I."
