The Power of Writing: Our Young Authors' Journey

At MDS, we believe that every child has a story to tell. Writing enables students to express their thoughts, creativity, and imagination, while strengthening essential communication skills. Whether crafting a personal narrative, developing a fictional world, or writing to inform, our students learn that writing is not only an academic skill, it’s a powerful tool for self-expression and connection.

We recognize that strong writing skills are crucial for success in all areas of learning. Through writing, students develop critical thinking, organization, and reflection. They learn to revise, persevere, and communicate ideas clearly, all skills that serve them far beyond the classroom.

This year’s North Carolina Reading Association Young Authors Competition invited students to explore the theme “Education, Advocate, and Empower.” It’s an inspiring opportunity for students to reflect on how they can make a difference in their world. Whether through storytelling, poetry, or personal reflection, our students are discovering the power of words to inspire change.

Our teachers have helped guide students through the writing process: brainstorming, drafting, revising, and polishing their final pieces. Student submissions will be sent to our local council this week, and we are eager to learn which of our young writers will advance to the state-level competition. Regardless of the outcome, we are proud of every student who has taken part in this annual competition. Each has practiced persistence, creativity, and courage in sharing their voice. We are extremely proud of our students. They are readers, thinkers, and advocates ready to make their mark on the world.
