The International Baccalaureate at MDS

Morganton Day School is proud to be an International Baccalaureate (IB) accredited school. Teaching and learning for students ages 3 through 6th grade is guided by the Primary Years Programme (PYP) framework, with the IB philosophy continuing in 7th and 8th grades as students prepare for high school. Our curriculum follows the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and aligns with the IB framework, allowing students to explore concepts more deeply, make local and global connections, and take meaningful action with their learning.

What is the Primary Years Programme (PYP)?

The PYP is a student-centered approach to education that reflects the best of current research and practice from IB World Schools across the globe. As a leader in future-focused education, the PYP prepares students to meet the challenges and opportunities of our rapidly changing world.

Learning as Active Agents

The PYP begins with the belief that students are agents of their own learning. Students work in partnership with teachers, strengthening knowledge and skills across and beyond subject areas. They also build conceptual understandings, problem-solving skills, and creativity while responding to new challenges. At the heart of the program is a strong learning community where every child has a voice, choice, and ownership in their education.

Early Years at MDS

The PYP also recognizes the unique needs of our youngest learners. For students ages 3 to 5, play is central to inquiry and discovery. At MDS, our Junior Kindergarten students engage in daily experiences that honor their developmental stage and integrate social-emotional, physical, and cognitive growth. These early years lay the foundation for a lifelong love of learning.

Developing Global Citizens

Morganton Day School students grow not only in academics, but also in social and emotional well-being. Rooted in international-mindedness, the PYP nurtures students who understand their roles in both local and global communities. MDS learners are encouraged to seek opportunities, take meaningful action, and work toward creating a better, more peaceful world.
