What is the Value of MDS and Independent Education?

I am often asked about the value of MDS and independent school education.

As Head of School, I see the value firsthand every day. Students actively engaged in meaningful learning, asking questions, developing answers, and challenging themselves to dig deeper and learn more. All of this occurs in a classroom community that raises students and supports them as they take risks to learn and grow.

As you know, MDS is mission-driven: We inspire a community of learners through inquiry to achieve educational excellence. The International Baccalaureate (IB) philosophy of education challenges students to think critically and solve complex problems. This philosophy takes their learning further by:

  • Supporting natural curiosity.

  • Helping gain a deeper understanding of concepts.

  • Driving them to ask more questions, compelling them to explore new topics. When students actively engage in their learning, they develop agency and take ownership and responsibility for their education.

Working together, IB students and teachers create questions and develop investigations to test theories. Ultimately, students are confident in their knowledge and continue as lifelong learners who become global leaders and change-makers. In short, MDS nurtures intellectual curiosity, encourages critical thinking, and promotes a lifelong love of learning while our curriculums are chosen to provide a superior education for our students.

Together in Education,
Dr. Mikusa
