Partners in Education: The Power of Student-Led Conferences

Student-led conferences are an important aspect of the reflection process for students, parents, and teachers. This time together gives students an authentic opportunity to think about learning. Adults are given a window into the students' world of learning as they set goals together and discuss challenges and successes. Valuable conversations about strengths, challenges, and goal-setting allow students to invest in their own learning. Personal agency is an essential part of this process, as students accept responsibility for their learning. This process helps them become lifelong learners as they develop the ability to reflect, communicate, and experience the benefits of having a growth mindset.

During student-led conferences, the grown-ups are active listeners and are able to discover ways to support student learning at home by creating connections. MDS values a school culture of engagement and growth where students play an active role in their education. Student-led conferences encourage students to think critically about their abilities and achievements. Students develop thinking skills, communication skills, self-management skills, and social skills they'll use for the rest of their lives.

Over the past few weeks, there has been an exciting buzz throughout the building as students select work, reflect, and prepare for these conferences. They have been enthusiastically sharing their learning with their teachers. Now it's your turn to step into this reflective experience! If you have not done so already, please make sure you sign up for conferences through the office.
