Head of School

Melanie Mikusa, Ed.D
Head of School

For over three decades, I have served children and families in various roles and environments, as an Outward Bound instructor, classroom teacher,  community volunteer, and school leader. In 2008, I was honored to become Morganton Day School's eighth Head of School.

I have always been passionate about education. My educational career began as an outdoor educator at the North Carolina Outward Bound School. While working for NCOBS I was introduced to Morganton Day School, an oasis of inquiry-based education nestled in downtown Morganton. After volunteering with the school, it became clear that I had found my life’s work.

As a Kindergarten teacher, I quickly realized the importance of a strong foundation in reading for our students. Being a lifelong learner I went back to school to build on my B.A. from The Ohio State University and earned my M.A. in Reading and Special Education from Appalachian State University. This led to gaining the additional credential of a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification in Early Childhood.

After 16 years of teaching Kindergarten and 1st grade at MDS, it was time to continue to learn and grow. I returned to Appalachian State University and earned my Ed.D. in Educational Leadership in 2018.

My wonderful husband of 40 years loved and supported MDS in so many ways during his life. OUr daughter, Flannery, attended MDS and attributes much of her successes to the strong foundation she built here. When not working, I enjoy reading, running, climbing, and hiking.
