2018 Thanksgiving Day Feast

We celebrated our annual Thanksgiving Day Feast in the Old Armory with family and friends. Children in grades K-8 prepared food with host families at various locations and returned to campus to enjoy a large meal together.  The JK3, JK4, and Kindergarten classes performed wonderful holiday songs and the meal was blessed by our Student Action Council President and Vice-President. We are thankful for the many blessings we have, including this tradition that brings us together each year.

World Kindness Day 2018 at MDS

A word about World Kindness Day from 3rd Grade Teacher, Jenna Holt: At MDS, our IB curriculum includes opportunities to put open-mindedness, tolerance, and respect into our learning every day.  When I first heard of World Kindness Day from our awesome JK teacher, Elizabeth O'Hagan,  I immediately knew this would be the perfect fit for our school.  Last year after reading the book Wonder, students were excited to walk to the theater and watch the movie on the big screen.  The #ChooseKind movement took off all over the world and MDS is proud to participate!    http://www.rhteacherslibrarians.com/latest-buzz/celebra...

40th Anniversary Time Capsule

The students and staff of MDS celebrated our 40th Anniversary on Tuesday, October 2 with bubbles, cake (courtesy of Ingles), and a time capsule internment. Mayor Ronnie Thompson offered kind words and helped commemorate the occasion by helping Dr. Mikusa dig and bury the capsule, which was designed by Sixth Grade students at MDS. This celebration is the first of several that will occur during the 2018-2019 academic year. Stay tuned for more events!

MDS Families work tgether to clean up campus and raise money

On Saturday, August 18, 2019, the students and families of Morganton Day School devotedly met from 9 am-1 pm to help beautify the campus. Children, as young as 2 years old, volunteered by spreading mulch, planting flowerbeds, washing playground equipment, and pruning bushes. This “All-School Cleanup” is an annual event that helps prepare the school grounds for the beginning of the academic year, while providing a fun way for families to interact. Meredith McSwain, Director of Advancement, reflects, “For Forty years, MDS has been located in the heart of Downtown Morganton and we have always endeavored to be good stewards in our community. Students Represent MDS at Supreme Court Session

On Monday, May 14, eight students represented Morganton Day School at the courthouse as the North Carolina Supreme Court held several sessions in our home town in honor of the court's 200th Anniversary. These student leaders welcomed lawyers, judges, and civilians into the Old Burke County Courthouse for several special sessions. While they were there, the students spoke with lawyers about the judicial process and with members of the historical society about the significance of the courthouse. They were then able to stay for the Supreme Court session. We are so grateful that our students had the opportunity to take leadership for this event, and for ...

Eighth Grade Student Presents Research at Blue Ridge HealthCare

Explore, Acquire, Excel. This is the statement on much of our MDS material, and Madison has done just that. At the beginning of the year, Madison decided she wanted to learn more about patients with dementia and figure out a way she could help. As part of her 8th Grade Personal Project, she researched how art impacts patients with dementia and proceeded to plan and implement several art classes for Grace Ridge. Her research went hand-in-hand with what the students were learning for their Future City project and after talking with Dr. Sharafsalah, she realized that the elderly population is rapidly increasing. She drew the conclusion that this has ...

Cultural Pavilion Celebrates Spain

Students at Morganton Day School walked to the COMMA on Tuesday, March 20 to see Flamenco Dancers perform. Shouts of, "Óle!" filled the air as students embraced this cultural event. Students learned about the history of the art form, how the dance is used to express emotion and tell stories, and the significance of each costume. As is common with our IB curriculum, our children eagerly asked questions in an auditorium full of people and could tie this performance into their units of inquiry. Two days later, second-grade students shared their own version of traditional Spanish dance during the MDS Cultural Pavilion, which occurred in Bennett Hall. ...
