Touch a Truck Family Event Successful in First Year

Smiles, laughs, and horns lit up the cloudy morning last Saturday in downtown Morganton. On Oct. 26, Morganton Day School held their first Touch a Truck family event at the Old Armory Building on McDowell Street. More than 400 attendees enjoyed the wonderful day with dozens of large trucks, construction equipment, racecars, and emergency vehicles to explore up close.

The event, a collaboration with Morganton Public Safety, encouraged children of all ages to interact with the truck operators and learn about their professions. Children gleefully climbed into the driver’s seat, honked horns, flashed lights, and moved buckets. A quiet “sensory hour” started the morning with no horns or flashing lights. There was also an indoor vendor fair, food trucks, and plenty of interactive activities and art projects.

The hands-on nature of this event exemplifies Morganton Day School’s I.B. curriculum and emphasis on experiential learning, STEAM projects, family and community involvement. MDS is proud to have been a downtown school for more than 40 years and is excited about expanding into the armory.

Thanks to generous sponsors Healthcare Solutions Podcast and Carolinas Healthcare System – Blue Ridge, and the support of the Big Dawg 92.1, the first-year event was a success. Touch a Truck will now be an annual event, and the next date has been set for Oct. 24, 2020.

Morganton Day School offers a 5-star preschool program along with the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) program for students in kindergarten through 8th grade, with an emphasis on inquiry-based learning and STEAM. If you would like more information or a tour, please call (828)437-6782
