THE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL TRADITION
As do all independent schools, Morganton Day School operates without funding from city, state, or Federal tax revenues. Instead, Morganton Day School relies on tuition income and broad voluntary financial support. This support includes annual giving, capital giving, and endowment income. Independent school parents place great importance on the education of their children and accept a major role in the continued financial well-being of their children’s schools.
Since the School was founded in 1978, parents have made voluntary financial support one of the School’s proudest traditions. Our parents join trustees, staff/faculty, grandparents, and friends of the School to make Morganton Day a resource-rich environment that enhances students’ possibilities for success. Parents’ gifts have enabled the School to build on a tradition of scholarship, service, stewardship, and leadership. Because these traditions are not self-perpetuating, we rely on you, the parents of today’s students, to support them.
ANNUAL FUND
Tuition alone does not cover the cost of educating a student. At most independent schools, tuition covers between 85 and 95 percent of the cost. The remaining 5 -15 percent is covered with philanthropic support generated by trustees, parents, grandparents, and faculty/staff. Morganton Day School’s Annual Fund, created by the Board of Trustees, provides annual budget relief to the entire school. We strive for 100 percent participation from trustees, parents, and faculty/staff. All gifts to the Morganton Day School’s Annual Fund are needed and appreciated. No gift is too small. Morganton Day School’s giving society recognizes multiple year pledges in the Legacy of Learning Society. Donors who give $1,500 or more in a multiple year pledge join the Head of School and Trustees for a special dinner.
CAPITAL FUND
In order for Morganton Day to make capital improvements and establish/grow endowments, funds over and above the operating budget must be raised. Morganton Day School Parents (The Children’s School) who preceded you provided the funds to purchase the property and build our existing building. Current and future students of Morganton Day will benefit from established endowments and continued expansion of the physical facilities which enhance the quality of education at our school.
ENDOWMENT FUND
Endowed funds are funds given to invest in the future of an institution. Endowment fund principal is invested and the interest generated is then used to provide support for Morganton Day as needed: to increase financial aid, to enhance professional development for faculty/staff, and to build the facility maintenance fund. Morganton Day families have established a scholarship fund at the Burke County Community Foundation to assist with financial aid. As we proceed with the renovation of the newly acquired Armory building (June 2007), an endowment will be established for long term building maintenance. Strong endowments make a strong institution.
PLANNED GIFTS
In the summer of 2007, Morganton Day School established “Forever Morganton Day”, to recognize those who include the School in their estate plans. Members who leave a gift to Morganton Day in their wills help ensure the future of our school.
AUCTION
Our annual auction will take place February 12, 2010 at the MDS Armory and it is a highly-lucrative and entertaining event. All families participate in a variety of ways: by making a family donation, acquiring items to auction, planning and managing the event, and by being present and working the night of the auction. The auction chairs will be keeping parents informed via parent meetings and newsletters. This is a fun evening that the school benefits from in a great way. If you would like to make a donation to this event, please complete the procurement form and submit it to the Office of Development. Procurement deadline is December 15, 2009.
GIFT WRAP SALE
Sales packets for Sally Foster Gift Wrap are sent home with students in August. The sale of this high-quality wrapping paper has proven to be very successful at Morganton Day School. This sale is not intended to be a competitive sales situation for our students but it does supplement the budget.

A book will be purchased in the child’s honor, presented on his/her birthday, and then placed in the school library. Each book will contain a book plate indicating the student’s name and birthdate.
