ENROLLMENT POLICY
Morganton Day School admits families who embrace the philosophical foundations of experiential education, parental involvement, and community service. The school seeks to build a community of families with a broad range of backgrounds and perspectives in order to enhance ethnic richness and diversity.
Just as parents have expectations of MDS, the school, likewise, has expectations of parents and students. Steps for enrollment are established to assure clarity of communication, and the securing of adequate information for wise decision-making.
ADMISSION PROCESS
Parents may enroll their children at any point in the year if a vacancy exists and the admissions criteria are met. Students applying for the next academic year will be accepted on a rolling basis after
March 31 as long as space is available. Returning students are given priority for re-enrollment until March 31.
Call the Morganton Day School office to schedule a visit to the school. This visit will include a tour of the campus and facilities and observation in the classrooms. There will also be opportunities to talk with the Head of School and Curriculum Coordinator.
Parents will receive an Admissions Packet from the school office.
The admission process includes five steps:
1. An application for admission is submitted with a $100.00 non-refundable application fee.
2. Confidential Teacher Recommendation forms will be completed and returned to MDS by the prospective student’s current teacher(s). The completed form should be mailed by the teacher directly to MDS in the stamped envelope provided in the admissions packet. A completed Transcript and Records Release Form should be given to the appropriate personnel at the applicant’s present school for release of the applicant’s records to MDS. (applies only for applicants to grades 1-8)
3. An achievement test will be given to all students applying for grades 1-8. The achievement test will be scheduled at a separate time from the classroom visit and will be administered by the MDS faculty at the school. A developmental readiness test will be given to Kindergarten candidates during their classroom visit.
4. A classroom visit for the prospective student (grades K-8) will be scheduled. This will be a morning visit from 8:00 to 11:30 where the prospective student will spend time in his/her current grade level classroom. During this time, the prospective student will be encouraged to participate in class discussion and activities.
5. Acceptance letter and contract mailed to admitted students.
When the Admission file is complete with all forms, records, and recommendations, the Admission Committee will meet. The Committee will review the student’s school records, MDS teacher observations, test results, recommendations, and samples of the student’s work from the classroom visit.
Parents will be informed of the Admission Committee’s decision within two weeks after all steps have been completed. (after March 31 for students enrolling for the next academic year)
Upon acceptance, the prospective candidate will receive an invitation to enroll and an enrollment contract. The signed contract and deposit must be returned to Morganton Day School within thirty days for students applying for the subsequent year. Students applying for the current year must return the signed contract and deposit before the first day of enrollment.
WAITING LIST
When no space is available in a grade, a waiting list is established. Students will be admitted as space becomes available according to their place on the waiting list. Special consideration will be given to siblings of students currently attending the school and children of faculty and alumni.
